Sony PRS Series or Amazon Kindle Ereader?

by Sarah Brook

The eReader era is here - eReaders are becoming more and more popular.

Amazon Kindle 2 has is currently dominating the market, but many other manufacturers are very close behind. The Sony PRS series is the closest runner-up. This reality in mind, many have sent me emails asking which model they should get.

The devices are doing their thing well enough, and I have heard good things about both of the choices. However, there are differences that would influence you decision.

The Kindle is the reader of choice for many. The wide selection of titles, along with newspapers and magazines, makes it lucrative enough not to consider the alternatives. And I’m not even mentioning the wireless capabilities.

One should be aware, though, of the conversion required to view PDF files on the Amazon Kindle. With not so perfect results, many students and business professionals should think again before ordering the Kindle.

While most of the academic work available in PDF format, the not so perfect conversion of the Kindle makes the lives of students even tougher than it already is. The documents are displayed awkwardly and sometimes they are completely unreadable. The same goes for the business professionals.

The Sony ereaders, although less user friendly, offer native PDF support and this is the choice for the aforementioned audience. Users have reported a slightly steeper learning curve when first starting to use the Sony’s, and the requirement to have a computer with an on-line connection at hand makes the experience different than with the Kindle.

But, that’s where things line up. Students and business users would have a computer and an internet connection available to them anyway, due to their lifestyle.

So, to sum things up:

If you are a heavy news and magazines consumer and like the much easier buying experience the Kindle offers, you should get it. You will enjoy the seconds it takes to deliver the content to your device.

On the other hand, if you know that you will mainly read files in the PDF format, you should go for the Sony PRS series. The native PDF support is so worth it.
