Winner of several Oscars and appreciation, the movie ‘Milk’ guarantees its audience the thrill and insight like no other hot flick. As the name implies this movie isn’t exactly about the milk products from some cowshed but about he gay rights activist Harvey Milk. Based on a true-life story this movie is centred on the true-life events of Harvey Milk. In those being a gay was a big thing and Harvey Milk was the first gay to be voted as a public officer in San Francisco, California.
The movie follows an earlier award-winning attempt to depict the life of Harvey Milk. The documentary titled The Times of Harvey Milk was released in November, 1984 and went on to win an Oscar for the Best Documentary Film. The 2008 release did equally well, if not better garnering eight nominations at the Academy Awards and ending up with two awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Original Screenplay. The former was awarded to Sean Penn for his brilliant portrayal of Harvey Milk and latter was earned by Dustin Lance Black.
The filming for Milk was also as authentic as its crew. It was shot at San Francisco’s Castro Street and at the camera shop - Castro Camera that was once owned by Harvey Milk. The movie is based on the lifetime period of Harvey Milk’s life from his 40’s to his assassination. The story starts of in New York where Milk stays with his lover Scott Smith and refuses the suffocating life of staying in a closet throughout his life. His fresh start-up business at the camera shop on Castro Street becomes the advantageous meeting place for the gay members of the San
Franciscan community. Milk basically focuses on the rights of gays in the by gone years and their upgradation. Harvey Milk was one man who really worked hard to change this part of every gay’s life at the time when being a gay was considered awfully shameful. Milk saw many failures in the early years of his life before being voted as supervisor. The realization of the seriousness of the gay rights issue incited a struggling phase in Milk’s life. Two of his colleagues Anita Bryant and Dan White were also elected at the same time as Milk.
Dan White’s role has been perfectly portrayed by Josh Brolin. Dan White is a character with conservative ideas and was therefore constantly “out-voted” by Milk and other supervisors who are liberal. Dan White’s increasing frustrations end up in devastating mess and mark the chilling end of the movie. ‘Milk’ is one movie you should surely go for. It is interesting, emotional and funny.
